Idle question: would you have the same suspicion if the songwriter was
named Steve Lewis?
I ask because over the weekend, I just discovered a 21-year-old
Liverpool lad named Eugene McGuinness whose debut single, "Monsters
Under the Bed," has immediately shot to the top of my own personal
Best of 2007 list, and whose debut EP THE EARLY LEARNINGS OF EUGENE
MCGUINNESS I've already pre-ordered from Amazon UK. If the songs on
his MySpace page are any indication, McGuinness is the next Damon
Albarn, with lashings of the Television Personalities' Dan Treacy and
Prefab Sprout's Paddy McAloon as well. He's clearly a genius
songwriter (the single's "And when the talk show ends, I scream/Right
at the screen for more pregnant teens" is one of the best couplets
I've heard in recent memory), but it never would had occurred to me to
suspect that he had unlisted outside help.
The (very good) video for "Monsters Under the Bed" is here:
