That's pretty presumptuous. Until the controversy this week I had never
heard the SONG "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" and only knew the name Rubinoos
from mentions on this mailing list. And I consider myself pretty well versed
on '70s pop having forged my musical career living through that decade.

"I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" was never a radio hit in Canada. It's not on any
K-Tel albums. It's not the theme song to some TV show or was used in a
pivotal scene in a Ben Stiller comedy. Avril is from a very small town in
rural Ontario, Canada...and until someone re-invented her as a skate
pop-punk at the age of 16, she was strictly a country artist (gasp!). Even
if she were listening to pop and rock radio delivered to her by the two
major radio stations in Kingston starting at the ripe age of one or two
years old, her musical reference point starts in the height of the SYNTH-POP
era - Tears For Fears, Simple Minds, Depeche Mode - and bad adult
contemporary movie soundtrack hits.

It would be like asking Hilary Duff if she's ever heard "Ramona" by The
Stampeders or "Cry Your Eyes Out" by Les Emmerson. Big hits in Canada.
Non-starters in the US.

Someone else on this list already connected the culprit of the crime -- her
co-writer/producer Gottwald who DID produce a remake of the song in the '90s
for another band. It's most likely his influence on the song that has put
Avril on the hot plate.

Jaimie Vernon,
Bullseye
