You're absolutely right, but that isn't the only reason that this series is
lame. To name but a few:
1. The guy playing Reggie really doesn't sound like him, and is way too
skinny. Reggie Jackson was a very muscular player for the time.
2. While John Turturro does a good job emphasizing Billy Martin's short fuse
and reckless ways, the southern accent he puts on is ridiculous. I mean, I
know Billy fancied himself a cowboy, especially when he was managing in
Texas, but the man was born and raised in Oakland and sounded a lot more
like Sonny Bono than Matthew McConaughey.
3. The guy playing Thurman Munson looks "kinda" like him, but sounds way
wimpier than grouchy Thurman ever did!
4. Oliver Platt's Steinbrenner bears little resemblence to the real McCoy.
The guy who plays Steinbrenner on Seinfeld does a much better vocal
impression (even if it's exaggerated for comedic effect), and looks more
like Steinbrenner from the back than Platt does from the front.
5. and don't even get me started on the guys who played Whitey Ford and
Mickey Mantle!
BTW, if you think I'm being too critical of the actors' resemblances and
mannerisms, believe me, it can be done a lot better. For example, Thomas
Jane, the guy who played Mickey Mantle in the film *61, did a spot on
performance.
6. (and biggest reason): whose idea was it to intersperce those Son of Sam
sequences? They have virtually no relevence to The Yankees, and it's all
overly morbid. The only reason I can for them doing this is that, when the
series is over, they're going to reveal that in fact David Berkowitz was not
the murderer, but in fact it was Billy Martin. :-)
And while I'm at it, what's the deal with ESPN airing the Rock, Paper,
Scissors tournament over the weekend??? Poker is bad enough, but egad,
what's next, Tiddlywinks?! No wonder Dan Patrick is leaving...
