Michael, am I wrong about Dean Friedman doing CD-ROMs for kids? I thought I
remembered reading that a while ago. Maybe those were the videogames you
mentioned?

I'll have to revisit his first album. My memory tells me it didn't do
anything for me after "Ariel," which is still one of the great songs... Is
the CD of his first album now out of print?

Way on the other side of the Hudson, deep in the bosom of suburbia,
Alan

Just listened to some of my "Have A Nice Day!" CDs, and came across
"Ariel" by Dean Friedman, a rare blast from the distant past. I'm digging
it now,
as I once did - quirky, funny, makes me feel kinda warm and fuzzy in a
way... does anyone know anything more about this guy and his music? I see
on Amazon and iTunes that he's still releasing music, and his Best Of
collection is selling for $60+, must be a rarity...

  Michael replies:

Oh my gosh! Dean is one of most played artists out here in Hawaii! He's
been on the radio show a few times. He still resides in New Jersey and
tours the U.K. quite a bit. His songs are wonderful. I can't recall but I
believe the "Have A Nice Day" CD uses the album version with the cold ending
while the song on the radio back in the eighties had the fade out along with
a couple verses removed. Most of the songs on the first two albums are
wonderful. His third album had "McDonald's Girl" got banned by the BBC due
to the age of the virgin girl. "Lucky Stars" may have been a big hit for
him in the U.K. but it looks the controversary over "McDonald's Girl"
cemented his popularity overseas. *lol

Both the Blenders and Bare Naked Ladies have covered "McDonald's Girl".
"Marginal Middle Class" is another listening favorite. His recent album has
been quite a hit with our listeners (even though we have to bleep about
every song due to language) with it's adult humor. "I Miss Monica" received
some airplay last year around the country.

Dean is a really nice guy who continued to do music while embarking on
another career to keep the bread flowing to the table for his family. He
has quite a bit of success as a video game designer and virtual reality
software. Like most artists involved with the Lifesong label in the
seventies didn't receive his share of royalties (It's the same old story).
I remember the first time that I interviewed him he was unaware that this
song was on a Rhino release. Unfortunately at this time, his first two
albums are out of print (hopefully he can get those masters back) which is
why his albums have been up there in price on eBay. Keep checking as every
once in a while someone will sell it for a regular price. It may also still
be available as a double album import CD which is cheaper than those auction
prices.
