Yesterday, the House Small Business Committee met to hear testimony about
the impending royalty rate increase for webcasters due to kick in on July
15. The chairwoman said she would prefer that a compromise be reached
outside of Congress.
This is the worst possible outcome of this meeting. It means that webcasters
will have to negotiate directly with SoundExchange. And that won't wind up
being a compromise in favor of webcasters. You have only to watch the
president of Tommy Boy records giving his testimony to the committee to see
why. Talk about self-serving. (Said testimony can be viewed on YouTube.)
There are two weeks to go until the July 15 deadline. It can't hurt for
those of you so inclined to contact your congressmen and congresswomen and
ask for something to be done, but it doesn't look good now, folks.
