More than two years after New York lost its oldies radio station, and
most of its oldies jocks, a station at the Jersey Shore is getting
them back together for a reunion weekend.
The Breeze (107.1 FM, 99.7 FM) is reviving the WCBS-FM tradition of a
"Radio Greats Reunion Weekend," July 21-22.
Familiar NYC jocks who will be on the air or calling in by phone will
include Harry Harrison, Dan Ingram, Bobby Jay, Bob Shannon, Cousin
Bruce Morrow, Don K. Reed, Herb Oscar Anderson, Randy Davis and Mike
Fitzgerald - who happens to be program director of The Breeze.
Not by coincidence, longtime WCBS-FM program director Joe McCoy is a
consultant for the Breeze, and Fitzgerald says he helped put this all
together.
Several well-known New Jersey hosts will also be part of the weekend,
including Don Tandler, who will reprise his oldies show on Sunday
night, 8-midnight.
Just before that on Sunday, says Fitzgerald, Reed will do a "Doo-Wop
Shop," 5-8 p.m.
Anderson will come from Florida to kick the weekend off on Saturday
morning, says Fitzgerald, who is now finalizing the rest of the schedule.
Fitzgerald says he talked with Dan Daniel, but that family health
problems may make it impossible for him to participate.
WCBS-FM dropped oldies in June 2005, leaving the format to smaller
suburban stations like WBZO (103.1 FM) and WMTR (1250 AM). Many of
the WCBS-FM jocks have struggled to find new positions in a radio
market that has dropped most pre-1970 music and values personalities
much less than it used to.
Ironically, the Breeze plays little of the vintage rock 'n' roll for
which the oldies crew is known.
It focuses on the '70s and '80s, says Fitzgerald, but it does stress
personality and it has a much larger playlist than most stations.
"This approach wouldn't work for every station, but it works for us,"
says Fitzgerald, noting the Breeze is No. 1 in the Monmouth-Ocean
County market.
If you can't get it on their radio, it streams at www.breezeradio.com.
