I hadn't been to many gigs earlier this year but the last month or so has
seen me happily bopping along to some quality acts including Maria McKee,
Fountains of Wayne, Patti Smith, Robbie Fulks and Aereogramme. The other
night Devo came to town and I went along to see if they were still as good
as when I'd seen them back in 1979 and 1980. In some ways they were actually
better - drummer Josh Freese was fantastic and he nearly stole the show from
the rest of the guys with his powerhouse drumming. The whole band were in
good voice throughout and the Glasgow crowd gave them rapturous applause at
every turn. A minor quibble might be that they loaded the early and middle
parts of the show with their big hits and the gig kind of petered out from
there on but maybe that's just me. My buddy Gillian was really disappointed
they didn't play "Working In A Coalmine" while I bemoaned the ommission of
"Be Stiff" but really a good time was had by all.

Next week it's a Thrills/Tiny Dancers double bill - can't wait!
