I think Second Wind had one really great Todd number, Change Myself, but
Nearly Human was probably the best since Hermit Of Mink Hollow.
The fact that Human was recorded live really helped the overall feel and
Todd's classic soul vibe and love of big singing choruses really shines on
For The Want Of A Nail, The Waiting Game and the awesome Runt-esque Parallel
Lines - a post Something Anything gem.
I liked parts of A-Cappella, Hall & Oates should have covered Something To
Fall Back On which is one of the best Todd soul pop belters in his
repertoire, and I liked Johnee Jingo (although slightly marred by Todd's
corny Irish-y accented lead).
Speaking of Hall & Oates I recently downloaded five or so of their
seventies/eighties classic for the pod, turns out I didn't have the CD's in
the house.
Private Eyes, Kiss on My List, Wait For Me, Did in A Minute and Out of Touch
are all tinglingly brilliant pop tunes elevated by Daryl Hall's commanding
blue eyed soul voice (is that a racist term by the way?). Thing is, I've
always thought that while Todd was the master crafter of the pop soul thing,
Daryl sang it better than him. (Kaz Sultan also had a purer voice IMHO) So I
wonder if Daryl Hall would ever do a whole album of Todd's soul tunes?
Probably too much pride all round for that to happen, Daryl writes and Todd
probably wouldn't be too keen on new definitive versions (but think of the
royalties!)
That's what I think anyway.
Sleep now.
Paul
