NEVER take any kind of phrase (such as "by and large") that I may ever say/write as gospel. In fact, I'm amazed at how poor my command of basic English generally is. 
 
I just realized about 2 months ago that "for all intensive purposes" is really "for all intents and purposes."
 
I should just stick with general clicks and grunts and I'd be much better off.
