Very true. And I forgot what a great song "Don't Look Back" is. But I
actually thought they had more soul in their songs when they weren't
trying to be Prince.
Roland Gift did release a belated solo album in 2002 (I believe) that
was produced by Prince musician David Z. It only got to the promo
sampler stage by Universal in the US before they dropped him. It can be
found fairly easily as an import. A few great songs, but by enlarge,
it's disappointing considering how long it was released after the last
FYC recordings. Telling though that Cox nor Steele were part of it.
Speaking of, what have THEY been up to? I see that they've stayed away
from any kind of English Beat reunion.

Well, you kind of have to think of the first and second albums as
being almost two different bands, but both have their merits. The
first album is them basically trying to be Everything But the Girl
(down to having the same producer and many of the same musicians) and
the second album is them basically trying to be Prince. But you can't
deny the quality of songs like "I'm Not the Man I Used To Be" (one of
the standouts of a mixtape I did some 15 years ago consisting of
nothing but songs using the "Funky Drummer" sample) and "Don't Look
Back," along with the album's more ubiquitous hits.
Hell, Fine Young Cannibals even got a tribute band -- anybody remember
a one-hit wonder called Londonbeat? Their single "I've Been Thinking
About You" was absolutely the most blatant FYC ripoff imaginable, to
the point that many people (including me) thought it was FYC's new
single the first time they heard it.

Totally agree.
I just transferred a 21-year-old VHS tape onto DVD of FYC Live at the
Ritz (what a great old MTV show this was!) and boy those songs from
the
first album really are great.
Their second album never did as much for me (though I still think
"Good
Thing" is a great single). Glad to have seen them on their tour for
that
first album.
