But can't that be said for MOST years in music? Your claim was that 1989
sucked as far as music was concerned, but then list any number of great
records that weren't popular commercial releases. Why the distinction?

I think many of us here spend a good portion of our time NOT listening to
big ticket major label releases....and I bet that a lot of Auditeers were
weened on nothing BUT College/Alternative fare.
So saying that a year sucked because McCartney or Billy Joel or Aerosmith
put out tripe that year doesn't really wash.

It's like saying 1977 & 1978 sucked because 1 out 4 new records was
dominated by disco, the rest by insipid ballads or progressive & stadium
rock. But not all of us were listening to this stuff. Some of us were
listening to Black Sabbath and Van Halen. Some of us were listening to The
Viletones and The Diodes. Some of us Queen and Cheap Trick.

So, to me....1989 was just another year of listening to tunes by acts that
weren't ubiquitous: The Alarm, Chalk Circle, Animal Logic, Indio, Love &
Rockets, Michael Penn, Paul Hyde, et al.

Oh and IMHO "Flowers In The Dirt" (and it's SECOND CD of tracks available
during the tour that year) is McCartney's last *great* album overall.
