My original premise excluded college radio records for the most part
I was mainly referring to popular music...anything in the top 40.

Indeed, these (and others mentioned) certainly redeemed a fairly crappy year
for music:
Pixies - Doolittle
Replacements - Don't Tell A Soul
XTC - Oranges & Lemons
Grapes Of Wrath - Now & Again
Stone Roses - s/t
Drivin n Cryin - Mystery Road
Bob Mould - Workbook
The Connells - Fun &Games
Blue Aeroplanes - Friendloverplane
Giant Sand - Love Songs
The Cure - Disentegration
....and the first Buffalo Tom album
