I don't remember 1989 as having much of a musical personality, but some 
records I really like came out that year:

Good Evening, Marshall Crenshaw
Oh Mercy, Bob Dylan (and I'm not really a Dylan fan)
The first Indigo Girls album
Heart Shaped World, Chris Isaak
Acadie, Daniel Lanois (he's probably why I like the Dylan)
Neville Brothers, Yellow Moon (yep, a Lanois kinda year)
Lou Reed, New York (which I think is great)
Nearly Human, Todd Rundgren
Smithereens 11
Oranges and Lemons, XTC

I used my Excel album data base to pull these out, but scanning the list, 
that is pretty much how I remember the year (toss in the McCartney, the 
Petty, and the Stones, Steel Wheels)

You can see, by 1989 I was no longer paying attention to popular music...
