I saw a fun tribute band last weekend called Sticks N Stones. They don't
have any recordings but they put on a very entertaining show
(http://www.myspace.com/sticksnstonesaustin). It was formed by the guys from
Household Names and 2 friends of theirs. I missed the other 2 tribute bands
on the bill -- an Elvis Costello band, The Costellophones, and a Hendrix
cover band, Stone Free. There's even a local association of tribute bands :
Greater Austin Area Association of Tribute Bands
(http://www.myspace.com/austintributebands). Austin also has The Eggmen
(they were voted Best Cover Band in Austin 5 times) ; members of that band
also formed Ouch ! (Rutles tribute band). Some of my favorite local
musicians (including Darin Murphy and Johnny Goudie) who all have their own
bands also play together in a cover band called Skyrocket:
http://www.myspace.com/skyrockettheband. Their ELO tribute set that they
performed last year with the Tosca String Quartet was fantastic. Skyrocket
has done so well that their original bands don't seem to play very often.
