If there is a video that you'd really like, I suggest looking at
www.veoh.com. You DO have to install their player program (which I have
done, with no apparent ill effects, having used it two months now). The
upside is that they let you directly download the videos, in whatever format
they were originally posted in, be it mpeg, flv, avi or whatever. Any video
you download will be saved directly to your hard drive (if you so select)
and you can play it with whatever player you prefer to use. You just need
their player program to get the initial downloading done. I have gotten
many, many HQ videos from the site, but do admit the selection is limited.

Michael already mentioned http://keepvid.com for downloading youtube or
other online videos, which works great.

There is also http://zamzar.com which will convert the video from youtube
FLV format to others (like wmv or mpeg) and email it to you. Just enter the
youtube url, what you want it to convert it to and your email address. I'm
not sure if they harvest email addresses so you may want to use a don't care
email address. Personally I have a hotmail account I use only for this
purpose.

Personally, I don't like to go to a website for every video I want to
download, so I just use a bookmarklet. To do the same go to this url:

http://1024k.de/bookmarklets/video-bookmarklets.html

Scroll down until you see the link that says "All In One Video Bookmarklet".
Right click on this link and bookmark it as a favorite.

Now when you are watching a youtube or other video site and want to download
the video, just go to your favorites, select "all in one video bookmarklet",
and it will give you the download link. Right click and save as, adding the
file extension of .flv.

Cheers,
Gary
