Many reasons, I'm sure. But the UK's front line is driven by single
sales, rather than albums. You get exposure by selling singles. And
who buys singles? Children. So children have a huge influence on the
pop charts. As far as Girls Aloud are concerned, they were created on
television. So they had a head start in the UK that they couldn't
have in the US. And after that, their appeal to teenage girls (and
some very good tunes) has assured continued success.
