Along similar lines - with apologies if this has already been
mentioned - there is www.sellaband.com. You listen to various clips
and pledge an amount of money and when the band reaches a certain
level ($50,000 I believe) then the money allows the artist to record
the album and you then get a copy.
I've not looked into whether sellaband keeps a proportion of the sale
profits, has part-ownership on the master-tapes, etc.
May - or may - not be worth looking at.
