I can only think of Alert Brooks whenever I hear "Bolero." If you're a
fan of "Comedy Minus One," you'll know what I mean.

Whoever was praising Chris Miller's stuff in Lampoon was dead on. That
guy was brilliant. Over the weekend, I dug out all of my old Lampoons
from the attic. I found the Beatles parody and will slowly, but surely,
make my way through them- that's my little summer project.

Back to comedy albums, I was about 9 or 10 when the first Steve Martin
album came out. I had that and his quickly released follow up memorized
from start to finish. I didn't get all the jokes, but they were included
in "my act" all the same (which I got in trouble for at school). I
hadn't listened to them in almost 30 years, until about eighteen months
ago when I got Sirius and found that one of the comedy channels plays a
lot from those early albums. I've got to say...they just don't hold up
as well as I was hoping. Some bits are hysterical, others just don't.
The thing was back then, he was just so different and fresh, it seemed
he couldn't do any wrong; everything that came out of his mouth was
funny. But those albums are definitely a product of their time. That
being said, I think that Steve Martin is one of the smartest comedians
of all-time. It seems that after he made Roxanne, his films and comedy
got a lot smarter and mature. That didn't mean he couldn't be silly (see
his excellent performance in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels). I thought his
hosting of the Oscars was much better than sitting through the
insufferable Ellen DeGeneris or worse, Billy Crystal.

You got to be in a comedy skit with Albert Brooks and George Jessel. :=)

The album you are referring to (one of my faves) is 'Comedy Minus One'.

My favorite bit was the auditions for a new national anthem.

Mana'o radio rules!!
