Jamie,
Actually I think IKE's business model is quite brilliant. I'm surprised
more bands don't do this. As a supporter of the band (again, to whom this
email was directed), I don't see any difference between supporting the band
via funding its recording and supporting the band by buying a couple of
their t-shirts at the merch table. The band is completely upfront on why
they are asking for the funds and are clear on what a supporter will get in
return for those funds. I'm no musician. The fact that I should want some
control over the recording process is, quite frankly, a bit ludicrous. That
part was never promised to me and I would never expect the band to give it
to me. Based on their output, they seem to be doing just fine creatively
and I have no desire to muck with their "formula", whatever that is. From
where I see it, IKE *is* having it both ways, and I say bully for them.
As has been mentioned ad nauseum on Audities, life for an indie musician
means working with the wolf constantly at your door. For bands I truly
like, I see no problem with helping them to keep that wolf away.
My 2 cents anyway,
Mark E.
