Jaimie, I think you are looking at the $50 as a business investment and the
band (and probably most contributors) are looking at is as a supportive
gift. I certainly don't expect ROI when I write that $50 check, and I doubt
most do.
I also don't know if I'd want to hear a CD from a band that has 100 people
voting on the song selection. Once you start taking that out of the hands of
the band and the producer they willingly align with, what you get isn't
their vision anymore, is it?
And I understand the number of people (managers, label guys, etc.) who also
have selection input in most outside-the-band label releases. Can't worry
about what I can't control, and I guess I've gotten used to the level of
meddling. Focus Group song selection gives me the willies though. :)
