My label has financed nearly $2 million in recordings over the last 10
years. Believe me when I say that $50 needs to be accounted for and needs to
be worth every penny...cause it takes the sale of a LOT of discs to make
that $50 back.
If IKE gets 5,000 fans at $50 a head and the album blows chunks the band
needs to be held accountable for taking their money on such a speculative
trip -- you'd ask no less of a stokebroker putting your cash into the stock
market for you. The least the band can do is record more tracks than they
need and let the fans who contributed get a say in which songs they want on
the album (including all of them if that's what they want).
The fans are now a defacto loans officer or, as my label has become cheekily
known in these parts -- The Bullseye Bank Of Canada. It's one thing to ask
someone to cough up $15.99 on a new release....due dilligence would be
assumed prior to purchasing so that the listener knew what they were buying.
With $50 on a project sight-unseen, I'd want a little bit of collateral for
my money. It isn't the AMOUNT that's the issue here, it's the faith in the
investment.
And no matter how it's sliced I'd want Executive Producer as my credit on
the album....not just my name added to role-call as part of the thank you's
in the CD booklet.
