Man, some great debate on these pages recently. Unfortunately I missed
half of it and had to research the archives. That said, here's my
sixpence:

1. Jamie, really enjoyed you 'opening the books' for us.

2. Adam and Mike C., very heartfelt and true posts regarding the
pitfalls of this industry from the creative side.

3. Bob Hutton, your words stung when I first read them. But do I agree
with much of their intent, you rapscallion (just wanted to type that).
The music industry's dated business model seems to be finally getting
it's due. The consumer has been granted more power, so a model that was
broken before seems to be broken in a different way.

Through it all the artist has been the one getting the most screwed the
majority of the time. But no one said I had to be a rock star (tm), or
you have to be a (musician, label owner, retail owner, studio owner,
etc). It sucks to be an auto worker in the States right now, but it's
capitalism working as intended. I hope that it will right itself and
we'll end up with a better model for smart artists and labels... and
auto workers. Until then we have to deal with what we have.

4. Kerry, I love you man. And I support your goal of creating music in a
most pure way... you know that on and off the record. But I can't and
wouldn't begin to try to define high art because it's so interpretive.
My wife keeps trying to convince me that Duchamp created art. I don't
see it that way. But I think 'God Only Knows' is high art because of the
emotional response it instills in me. So, to each his own. I'd still
rather listen to The Beatles than Sonic Youth, and my dislike of easily
80% of the music liked by most Audities members (including some of my
own) is well documented.

As far as hearing 'very little in the way or originality and, to me,
that equates to not earning a paycheck' please see above comment
regarding capitalism working as intended, then check the current top
ten. Original? Methinks not.

Regarding 'no one DESERVES accolades and millions of dollars just
because they can strum a guitar and warble a few lyrics'... well, it's
back to capitalism. Do I think tall people who can play basketball at a
high level should earn millions of dollars? See response #5 below.

5. "Splitsville" Rob, you tall SOB... I never liked you. P.S. Larry Bird
sucks.

6. Music easy? For those who care, Trampoline and Yearbook were two of
the 'easiest' songs I've written... Trampoline might have taken me 15
minutes. But the emotional, financial and creative toll it takes to make
good music (your interpretation may vary, see #4 above) is not easy. I
salute everyone who stays in the game.

Thanks for reading,
Matt
