If I remember correctly they initially recorded it around 1967 with Brian
Jones playing sax on it. They didn't finish it until '69/'70 when it was put
out as the b-side to Let It Be. Also, Lennon was going to release it with
What's The New Mary Jane as a Plastic Ono Band single and I think there may
even have been a catalogue number reserved for it but that was vetoed by the
other Beatles.
Actually thinking about it I seem to remember from my Dad's copy of the Let
It Be single that you can see the original catalogue number scratched out on
the b-side. Not sure how that remained there but there it is.
I would guess it wasn't put out because it's a silly novelty and wouldn't
have fitted on any album of the time rather than any difficulty making it
work structurally - though the final version is heavily edited down from the
version that appears on Anthology. I guess they didn't have anything else
lying about at the time of the last single.
