I think his persona is exactly the reason he hasn't succeeded in America. It
doesn't translate, he's too much of a smart arse. Also from what Anna said
the first time he went over he probably wasn't in the best shape and first
impressions count. His live shows though are probably one of the best things
about him, I may not be a huge fan of his music but there's no question in
my mind he's a very good live performer. A few years ago he played 3 nights
at Knebworth to 375000 people so he must be doing something right.

Of interest to some on the list might be that after he split with Guy
Chambers he hooked up with Stephen Duffy from The Lilac Time and he co-wrote
the whole of his album Intensive Care. His latest was made with a whole
bunch of collaborators including, as was mentioned, The Pet Shop Boys. Lily
Allen turns up on a couple as well. Unfortunately they decided to release
the title track as the first single which basically killed the album in the
UK (youtube will give you the video evidence) and it's probably his smallest
selling record despite being perhaps his most interesting.

Was glad to read there are some who appreciate Girls Aloud given that
they've released some of the best singles of the past 5 years. Look past the
image and their songs are enormously inventive, mashing up different genre's
and time signatures and always having a killer chorus (and sometimes more
than one killer chorus in the same song). And sorry Stewart but I would have
said Atomic Kitten never made it in the US because they were just plain bad,
McCluskey involvement or not.

(Incidentally OMD are back together and currently touring the UK playing the
Architecture & Morality album)
