Listen y'all, I don't think Kerry was trying to noise everyone up with
his comments - he's as entitled to his views as the next man (even if I
can't ever imagine enjoying listening to his musical embroidery of a 53
minute drum solo!). It's not his fault people in the industry are
finding things tough - I feel for Michael C too - I know him slightly
and I like his music very much (he works an audience pretty well too,
should you get the chance to see him play). It's unfortunate for
Michael that it sounds like his studio business (equivalent to the "day
job"?), which should be supporting his creative side, is facing some
tough times. There ain't no easy solution there.
I am comparing Michael's position with my friend Bob Kelly's. Bob has a
good solid body of work behind him with maybe half-a-dozen Kelly's Heels
albums. He'd love to find a big audience too, I'm sure. His band's new
website has links to iTunes/eMusic/CDBaby, so it has never been easier
to buy his stuff (go on, you know you want to!). He wants his music to
reach as many people as it can. I haven't spoken much with him since
the new website went live, but I'd still be surprised if he EXPECTED to
make a profit. I'm sure he hopes he can recoup most of his costs at
least but I can't see him voluntarily giving up his day job (in
printing) in a hurry.
I'm no expert, but I can only imagine two ways of making money from
music sales without having a steady day job to support you:
1. get signed with a major, or at least a large indie with good distribution
2. sell your stuff direct to your customers from a website, and get
publicized in some way enabling more fans to know about your web presence
I don't get the idea mentioned in relation to the band IKE - cough up
$50 and if enough other people do likewise, we'll have enough to make an
album - and you'll get an autographed copy. That looks more like
charity to me - I'm sorry folks but there are many other more deserving
charities in the world than a struggling rock band.
Bob
PS Robbie Williams - bleurgh!
