Shit, I hate when I send an email before I finish
composing/editing it. Sorry if any of the artists on
this list are offended by my comment, but I basically
stand by it. My thoughts on paying for art is "It
better be original, or you're not going to earn my
respect (and cash)".
In a nutshell, I think popular songwriters and bands
have been grossly overcompensated for their efforts in
the past, and that's trickled down to every budding
Jewel or Andy Sturmer today thinking they deserve
millions for their unique take on the popular
songform. They don't. Creating art transcends
business, and mixing the two is asking for trouble.
Maybe we can get back to simply creating art, putting
it out there with no expectations, and being happy
with whatever happens. If it's worthy, someone will
notice and if not, then it's back to the drawing
board.
