All I am doing is making observations on changes that have happened
that may have affected the business side of the business side of the
industry. I don't think for a second that people shouldn't make all
the music they want. I've recorded 85 crappy songs myself - it was an
unbelievable amount of fun - and I highly recommend it no matter what
your skill level.
With regards to the new digital deliver vs. the traditional diy method
- thinking of Guided By Voices sitting in their basement handcrafting
a different cover for each copy of that one album - or Art Chantry's
amazing work with Estrus records - or that beautiful big eyes art that
graces Sympathy compilations - or D.Boon and Watt in that old van - or
Billy Childish doing god knows what - I am making a personal
preference value judgement there. And I think it's a shame that it
might not be finacial viable to operate like that anymore - and I
personally will miss it.
So - if appreciating the effort and the personal and financial risk
that went into making a real 'for-sale' record the old way is elitist
I guess you got me. I don't feel bad too about that - but am worried
that I'm boring the heck out of 750 people on this list - and for that
I apologize.
