One other factor that pushes me towards buying less CDs - UK prices. I've
read on this list before about people who were unhappy about a CD being
priced as high as $18 in record stores. In the UK record stores, prices
tend to be around £14 (so roughly $28)! Even new releases on special
promotion will be around £10 (or $20).
I used to be one of the guys who dissed the idea of downloads, arguing
that it wasn't the same not having the physical product, the liner notes
etc. Now I am fine with just having the music on the hard disc and the
mp3 player. Music HAS become more commodified than it used to be - I'm
not saying that's right or wrong, but it HAS happened, maybe as
collections have grown and the concept of "shuffle-play" has grown in
popularity.
Midlake's "Trials of Van Occupanther" sure is a great album though - even
if I have no idea what it is all about!
