...damn. Just damn. VAST has been one of my favorite bands for awhile now
- I can't think of anybody that's been better over the last four CDs than
they have (well, actually, VAST is pretty much a he - Jon Crosby - not a
they). Finally caught them live at the Fox in Boulder the other night and
it was one of those moments where all was wonderful with the world.
I've always had a hard time triangulating them for people. Crosby is
obviously a U2 fan, but the music isn't really derivative of that. He
owes a certain debt to Floyd. But there was always something else in
there, some other reference I couldn't quite put my finger on. That is,
until late in the set when they hit an absolutely staggering cover of
"Nights in White Satin." Then it made sense.
Marvelous stuff, for those who like atmospheric powerfully pop rock. Or
whatever.
