I just saw the vh-1 show with Elvis and The Impostors playing with Deaf Cab,
Billy Joe Armstrong and Fiona Apple. Although the producer/host of the show
comes off a little pretentious and the "green room" segments seem lame and
scripted (and don't get me started on the stage with the built in moat!),
you can't argue with the music. It was filmed in 2006, and Elvis flat out
rocked (although he seems to be bout a half beat slow on the vocals - maybe
an ear monitor issue?) and Armstrong was a great choice. It made me pull out
THIS YEARS MODEL, still one of my top ten rock records ever.
But the stunner was Fiona Apple - mesmerizingly beautiful (those eyes lock
me in), she delivered a haunting, chilling, borderline psychopathic reading
of "I Want You" that sent a chill up my spine. Like wayching a voyeuristic
stalker come unglued in front of your eyes, in song. I don't know what she
was channeling, but even Elvis will have to admit that it's *her* song now.
I've seen a couple of these shows - Cyndi Lauper was another good one -
artist with guests trading a couple of songs but mostly doing the
headliner's catalogue. As if they uneartjher Jules Shear's original
"Unplugged" model and plugged it in.
