Certainly the Audities list, like other e-lists, is a "music
discussion"
forum, and perhaps the question came from a purely honest head-
scratching place, but it seemed to me the way the question was
originally posed (and perhaps why Stewart responded the way he did),
Jeff was not just asking because he was puzzled and curious, he was
asking because he wanted someone to explain to him something he's not
going to accept anyway. He's made up his mind,
as most of us do after we're exposed to certain music that we don't
like, but he's still wondering why there are people with different
music taste and why they hear something he doesn't. It's as if he
was saying "I don't really hear it, why do YOU hear it" -- and I
think
the question isn't going to be answered to satisfaction -- there's
really nothing anyone's going to be able to say that will satisfy the
need to know....
My point being, why not just accept the fact that some people like
bands you won't, and not try to get people to convince you of
something you've already made up your mind about.
I can't speak for anybody else, but I have asked that same questions
(oddly enough, I've asked it about the Arcade Fire) in a couple ways. In
some cases it's been a legit question - what do you hear in it that you
like? In others it's been more of a "what the hell is wrong with you?" I
have no idea who's mind is made up or not, but in either case it seems
like a subject that's of at least as much value, discussion-wise, as a
good half of what comes through this pipe.
P.S. I debated hitting "send" on this but figure it wasn't an email
that should get people too riled up...that is, unless you read
something
into the above and *want* to get all riled up...I was just making an
observation, it's not a personal attack, even though I've used two
names in the post....
No, it doesn't seem personal at all. I understand where you're coming
from generally - I just thought maybe the brush was a bit broad.
