I see what Marty is saying about the later album tracks being key to a 
fuller understanding of the Beach Boys as a whole, but I can't agree 
that any of those songs he mentioned are "the best part" of the Beach 
Boys experience.

To my ears, the key to the Beach Boys is the period where the 
hitmaking prowess and the progressive desires were in sync: for me, if 
SUMMER DAYS (AND SUMMER NIGHTS) and THE BEACH BOYS TODAY don't do it 
for you, then the likelihood that you're going to ever really like 
(rather than "appreciate") the Beach Boys is pretty much nil.
