Well, Sam, you and I have had our disagreements over the years,
as I have with many people on these music-related e-lists, but
maybe it's just that these types of questions, or the way they're
posed, always seem to make people feel a bit defensive if they
happen to like a band that other people don't...

Certainly the Audities list, like other e-lists, is a "music discussion"
forum, and perhaps the question came from a purely honest head-
scratching place, but it seemed to me the way the question was
originally posed (and perhaps why Stewart responded the way he
did), Jeff was not just asking because he was puzzled and curious,
he was asking because he wanted someone to explain to him
something he's not going to accept anyway. He's made up his mind,
as most of us do after we're exposed to certain music that we don't
like, but he's still wondering why there are people with different
music taste and why they hear something he doesn't. It's as if he
was saying "I don't really hear it, why do YOU hear it" -- and I think
the question isn't going to be answered to satisfaction -- there's
really nothing anyone's going to be able to say that will satisfy the
need to know....

My point being, why not just accept the fact that some people like
bands you won't, and not try to get people to convince you of
something you've already made up your mind about.

Now, I'm just an older curmudgeon type who has (sorta) made
peace with the fact the people are going to like what they're going
to like and there's not much point in being drawn into a discussion
about something when it all comes down to subjective tastes...but
I was much more like Jeff (and you, Sam) earlier in my life, when I
hadn't yet figured it all out that we're just going to be different...and
hey, why not focus on the stuff that we might have in common,
rather than trying to discuss what our differences are all the time....

Like I said, some people like mustard too, as I do, but there are
going to be people who don't and they're not weird or strange, they
just don't like the way it tastes. And people will like Arcade Fire and
Modest Mouse and whatever it is that you don't, and you'll continue
to be puzzled by both band's popularity, but it doesn't mean people
who like themhave horrible music taste either...that's all.

Bryan

P.S. I debated hitting "send" on this but figure it wasn't an email
that should get people too riled up...that is, unless you read something
into the above and *want* to get all riled up...I was just making an
observation, it's not a personal attack, even though I've used two
names in the post....
