  Hi Chuck,

In the book that I just finished reading last week - Chuck Klosterman's "Fargo Rock City" - he gets into a small discussion about the merits of Grand Funk. I don't know if you've read "F.R.C." or not, but it's Chuck Klosterman's (who was a writer/editor at Spin magazines) memiors about being a teenage Hair-Metal fan in rural North Dakota.

He calls Grand Funk something like the "secret/or closet" influence that most 1980s Metal bands wouldn't own up to; but the one that if you're much of a musicologist that you can spot being in the mix from a mile away. He thinks that Grand Funk was particularly influential on the eclecticism of Van Halen (the David Lee Roth version). He also believes that much of the party-hearty attitude of Hair-Metal comes from Grand Funk. He says that while most of these HM bands seemed to think that Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath were much cooler influences to own up to, and while many of them did own up to being influenced by Aerosmith, if you really listen to the music, Grand Funk, KISS, and Aerosmith seem more likely to be the major influences of 1980s Hair-Metal. This made total sense to me too, after I read it. Klosterman also puts forth the idea that in reality Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath had much more of a direct influence on the more somber 1990s Grunge bands that
 extincted Hair Metal.

I also stayed glued to the NFL draft for the better part of yesterday (Saturday) afternoon too. Don't know why, but I usually do, most years. I watched it with a friend who's a huge Dolphins fan. It really riled him up that they didn't take Brady Quinn at number nine in the first round; spoiled his whole day. I'm lucky; though I like football in general, I don't have a "team". Living in Eastern Arkansas, I figure what's the point? It's not like there's a team in Little Rock or Memphis that's a natural for me to root for. I'll usually get into a team for three our four years, based on what players and coaches they have - sort of the general likeabilty factor of the team - and I usually like a team with a high powered offense. I know that defense and running the ball really wins championships, but it's lots more fun to watch a team that can really throw it. I think I mostly watch the draft to 'appreciate' when I see a team doing really well. I'll be like: "Their
general manager did a bang up job today. They'll be good (if they aren't already) in a couple of years.

  Peace,

  W.D.

Ok this probably goes along with the people who like Ray Davies better than McCartney or the Kinks better than the Beatles (my brotha from another mutha Robbie included). But, ok... let the flaming begin!!! I like Grand Funk Railroad better than Led Zeppelin!! Always have, alway will. I'd rather hear "Closer to Home" than Stairway To Heaven", "We're an American Band" than "Rock N Roll", GFR's "Heatbreaker" than Led Zep's "Heartbreaker". Though I do like Sabbath's "Paranoid" better than GFR's. I had this discussion with Andy Harrison former Howlin Maggie guitarist, now Tim Smith's (former jellyfish) from Sheryl Crow's band, guitar tech. He looked at me like I was crazy!!! But it's true. I don't know why, because my older brother blasted both bands thru my house all the time when I was growing up. But I always like Grand Funk better. But what do I know, I think KISS blows them both away!! Also I like Poison & LA Guns better than Guns N Roses too. Ok now back to the NFL draft.
Go Bears!!!
