And in the category of "hit covers that only pop geeks knew were
covers in the first place," I nominate Natalie Imbruglia's cover of
Ednaswap's "Torn," which hit the charts mostly because it was so much
better than the original, which was only a couple years old at the
time.
I agree with you about Natalie Imbruglia's material, particularly the stuff written for her by Gary Clark (of the late and lamented Danny Wilson). At least two of his songs - 'Do you love?' and 'Hurricane' - should have been massive hits for her. The fact that Natalie has not exactly been beaten with the ugly stick is, of course, a total bonus.
