The Beatles for me are my absolute template. I don't particularly sound like
them at all and probably couldn't if I wanted to. But I do know that
everytime I'm recording a new song somewhere in the back of my head is this
question -"how would the Beatles approach this?". Now mind you, I was 7
years old in February 1964 and when I saw them on the Ed Sullivan show I
knew that my life had some purpose. Of course in those preteen days that
purpose was to be a drummer. Sadly I had and still have no ability in that
direction at all. But I did learn how to play the damned guitar.

I can think of no other band in the history of pop music who accomplished so
much in a 7 year period. Perhaps they weren't the absolute best at their
particular instruments (though perhaps they were) but as a unit they were
amazing. As to whether we should all hang up our respective instruments
because we can't possibly better their output? - of course not. I do think
that many bands have produced work of similar excellence. My favorite band
of the last 25 years is XTC but maybe for someone else it's U2 or Squeeze or
God forbid Green Day. Doesn't matter - we like what like, love what we love
and to hell with the stuff we don't dig.

Hey, I like Bread a lot. Still think Badfinger was better though...
