My own disdain for the Doors was never centred on my loathing of all things
Jim Morrison (a lounge singer trying to be a rocker and coming off as a
pretentious wannabe)....but rather that annoying Hammond keyboard sound.
Nothing says "dated" like a cheesy keyboard...until SmashMouth used it to
full effect and showing the true novelty of the instrument. I've hated Deep
Purple for the exact same reason.

With that said....The Doors' "The End" is one of the most haunting, moving
pieces of NON-pop music recorded in the last 40 years. I never really
appreciated it UNTIL it was married to the napalming scene in 'Apocolypse
Now'. When I hear the song now, it immediately stirs up those visuals. And
it's a pretty powerful song that can evoke an instant visual memory for me.
