I have (whisper it) friends who don't like The Beatles at all, neither
early, nor mid, nor late period. They tend to prefer The Rolling Stones
or Led Zep or whatever. I do think they are as entitled to their opinions
as me - even if their opinions are wrong ;-)
Most "chart" music today doesn't sound Beatles-influenced to me. I think
its' more soul, funk and hip-hop influenced. I don't care for it much,
although a lot of people do. Basically I think any obvious influence of
the Beatles, although immense in the past, is fairly limited these days
(except in our beloved power-pop). I also read somewhere (and totally
agree) that Pet Sounds has been no great influence at all on popular
music, apart from a niche of power-poppers who seem to occasionally write
songs whose style slavishly copies Pet Sounds era Beach Boys (not that I
think that is a bad thing).
I concur with the viewpoint that it is harder to be totally blown away by
new stuff, the older you get. When I was a nipper, it was punk that did
it for me, specifically the more melodic side of punk -
Ramones/Dickies/Pistols/Damned - and power-pop - Barracudas/The
Records/The Boys/The Motors. However here are a few more recent efforts
that made me leap around the room in my zimmer frame:
- "I Concentrate On You"/"Manna"/"Big Red Sun" (Splitsville's "Repeater"
album)
- "buzzbomb!"/"Big Red Catalina" (Vandalias' "buzzbomb!" album)
- "Calling Sydney"/"Sweet Bitch"/"Stranded Stars" (The Shazam - "Godspeed
The Shazam")
- "Broken Heart Token" (The Ashes - "Smashed!")
- "Should've Seen Her" (Kelly's Heels - "Gone Off Pop")
