Hey Will---
At first scan, without even going to the interviews, there are a number
of adds I'm making to my "buy" list. That's a lot of good work---and
some engaging stuff for all music fans in search of something off the
beaten path.
Whenever these discussions come around, I always put in my vote for
Phillips & MacLeod's "Le Partie du Cocktail" (Polydor, 1978, I believe).
P&M were session musicians and writers. They scored one minor writing
hit with Seals & Crofts "Takin' It Easy." P&M's own version of that song
is a bit bluesier and not nearly as AC friendly. I'm pretty sure there
wasn't much of a promotional budget behind the original release of this
album, so it does a quick death. P&M did release a follow-up, which has
some great moments, but doesn't hold up as well in total as "Partie".
I describe the sound on this album as "Badfinger Meets the Beach Boys in
Boston". Wry lyrics, lovely melodies, nice harmonies, big guitars and
sticky hooks. SOTT participants have received a couple of P&M tunes on
my compilations. As far as I know, this has never been released on
CD--and Google fails when looking to find out about either Phillips or
MacLeod.
Anyone else want to chime in about this one?
Man, would I love to see it as a CD release!
