Here's an idea for a thread I can't recall having seen before .... albums
you initially thought sucked like an vacuum, which now seem strangely
essential.
My offering is Neo-Wave by Silver Sun. I couldn't believe how poor this
sounded when I got it. Now I realise that impression was founded more on
expectations based on the band's irresistable debut album. While Neo-Wave
can't compete in the sheer fizzy lemonade and chewy bubblegum stakes, I
now think that this is only because the band were trying to make a 'rock'
album as opposed to a 'pop' album. Although I still think that Neo-Wave
sags a bit in the middle (the Johnny Mathis cover, the ballad, "Sharks"
and the pointless instrumental, whose title I forget), some of the other
tracks are right up there with the best of Silver Sun - "Cheerleading",
"I'll See You Around", "Scared", "Mustard" etc. Given that there are 16
tracks in all, I reckon by dropping the Johnny Mathis cover and the
instrumental (Let's keep "Sharks" for pacing, eh?), the album would have
been much more cohesive overall.
Anyway that's my tuppence-worth for a recently re-discovered great LP.

PS when I queried the odd final mix of Dad's Weird Dream on Silver Sun's
MySpace page, I got a reply from JB (presumably James Broad) which said
that there had been several remixes his own tougher mix was on the
Japanese version, so if I wanted the 'real' Dad's Weird Dream, the Jap.
import was the one to buy. I notice they never put that on a sticker on
the front of the domestic release!!
