I hope you're right, Alan.

Most small broadcasters (like me) will not be able to afford higher royalty
rates. I fund my efforts out of my own pocket because I love the music and
want others to hear it. I'm picking up listeners and giving mostly
independent artists an outlet for getting their music played. This is my
"mission statement".

I am well aware that businesses are in business to make money; I'm just
disappointed that I am more than likely going to have to shutdown my modest
station.

It seems obvious to me that increasing royalty rates are an attempt to prop
up lost revenue streams from slow CD sales (or maybe the recording
industry's inability to manage their own books).

I wouldn't worry just yet. From what I've been reading, the last couple of
times things seemed they might become this dire the RIAA struck
fairer-than-expected deals with small webcasters (the current rates for
royalties through LoudCity, which pays ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and SoundExchange,
are pretty fair, in my view). Depending on how many listeners you have, how
much profit you're making, etc., this may not even change your situation.
And there will be appeals on this ruling.

In other words, don't get rid of your ShoutCast server just yet, Farrar.
Chin up!
