I drove a few hours to the Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland for this last
night (would have gone a day earlier if I knew that Alex Chilton was there
the night before!) and it was AMAZING! I didn't catch the name of the
opening act (a shaky Detroit Cobras knockoff) but The Reigning Sound were
killer as always - and Dave Amels is their new keyboard player!!! Man, he is
the perfect addition to their sound - he never overplays and always has the
right touch. Great set, almost an unofficial "greatest hits".
After a short break they came back accompanied by two back up singers and
Mary Weiss, the former leader of the Shangri-Las...a release party for her
first solo album and the first time she's been on stage in almost 20 years
(I think she last did some stuff with Dion?) She's got to be 60, but looks
40 and sounds 30. At first she seemed a bit tentative (duh!) but once she
got into it and THAT VOICE started to be more commanding - wow! Many of the
songs were from her new record (see below) but she did some of the older
songs too, and seeing her belt out "Walking In The Sand" was surreal.
If it comes near your town, you absolutely have to see this show. Also saw
The Charms again this week (killed - heading out to tour with Ian Hunter and
The Zombies on the West Coast) and will see the Buffalo Killers on Friday
(second time in three months). 2007 is starting to rock..
Mary's record DANGEROUS GAME (Norton) has mostly Greg Cartwright songs, a
Jeff Felice tune, a Brill Building tune and another cowritten by Andy
Shernoff - and it is really, really good.
And breakfast at Tommy's in Cleveland Heights was the icing on the cake.
cheers
