I second The Black Cat and 9:30 Club, though you may also want to check
out Iota Club & Cafe in Arlington, VA (an easy Metro train ride from DC)
- a quick look at their calendar shows Modern Skirts and Winterpills
(separate shows) playing there this month. Great, small venue.
As for CD shops, DC lost the awesome DCCD a few years ago, but there's a
new shop in town that comes close to it (though mostly indie, whereas
DCCD was more eclectic): Revolution Records, just off the Van Ness metro
station. They also have live acts in the back room once in a while.
Other than that, my favorite places to shop are all outside the city:
The C Depot (College Park, MD), Joe's Record Paradise (Rockville, MD),
CD Cellar (Arlington, VA).
Thaitanic, just down the street from the Black Cat, has my favorite
panang. Awesomely coconutty AND spicy. Other faves: The Diner in Adam's
Morgan and Luna in Dupont Circle, but I'm not much for fancy dining, so
these are just "good food" spots I enjoy.
