Without goiving this too much thought, I submit that the Beatles invented 
the rock band, period.  They invented st5udio albums,  They invented 
breaking up.  They invented going solo.  Every rock band you want to name--  
Floyd, U2, Led Zep, whatever-- is in the Beatles' debt and exists in their 
wake, and the Beatles deserve some of the credit for these bands' subsequent 
wakes.  When someone invents something as big as a rock band that is totally 
post-rock-band, I'll consider their impact next to the Beatles.
