Ok..most of you know the story..Kevin Rowland forms a band and circa 79/80
releases a tremendous, brutal, soulful record called "Searching for the
Young Soul Rebels" - A record that, as I mentioned in a previous post,
changed my life. It was the sound..the freakin' horn section..the
chanting..the soul and feel of the record..it was like nothing I had ever
heard before or since. The band was intense and Mr Rowland, his intensity
just short of the power or a nuclear bomb, was apparently hard to get along
with - so, the band fired him and he was left bandless and the remaining
Midnight Runners grabbed a couple of mates (inlcuding Mick Talbot before
Style Council) and formed The Bureau ( a pretty good horn band in its own
right).
Mr Rowland then went and formed the second incarnation of Dexy's - the
horn's were still there but it was even more intense! The singles that came
out during that time "Plan B" and "Show Me" shouted out at you more than
played for you. I remember sitting and staring at the pic sleeves as a
kid..just waiting, hoping for the next record..aside from Dexy's..the
Newtown Neurotics were my other fave band at the time (that was a side
note)..
So we waited..for a record..a record that would blow us away like the first
album..this was '81...the year came and went with little news..then came '82
and Dexy's (Mr Rowland) ditched the horn section for the Emerald Express
(the fiddle group) and "Come on Eileen" came out and the band was
different..still soulful..but somehow just not as intense..
So what happened?..Well during 81 the boys recorded little but toured and
played some radio shows and that is what is captured in this amazing cd I
just got.." Dexy's Midnight Runners: The Projected Passion Revue"
This is really what is left of Dexy's II in terms of recorded material and
it is a shame because this was a tight band..in any event..for those willing
to capture a little of that magic you should definitely get this record.
Aside from the original singles, two BBC performances are here for you to
enjoy. The sound of the BBC recordings are not great..they are a bit tinny
and the background vocals are barely audible but you do get to listen to
those magnificent horns...just listen how the band moves from one song to
the other so effortlessly..the segue way between "Outlook" and "Tell Me When
the Light Turns Green" is breathtaking..and the segue way between "Soon/Plan
B" to "Burn it Down" takes my breath away (I said that twice - a record
reviewer I am not).
I know that I am way too over the top on this record..I know my passion for
this band is beyond comprehension..but remember back in 79/80?..remember
those early punk records..remember those early new wave records?..did anyone
sound like this ?..has anyone sound like this since?
I just use to stare at the first album..wondering if I would ever find the
young soul rebels..the only rebel I ever wanted to be..
