The reasons I dislike Celine Dion could fill a book -- vaccuous, soul-less
renditions of songs that might otherwise be redeemable if sung by someone
whose first language were English (she sings phonetically in many cases),
the unbridled glazed look in her eyes in regarding everything she does (not
to mention the crying, sobbing, weeping and infernal chest pounding), and
not the least of which is the fact that she was a child-star prodigy meaning
that any or all of the above points might very well be due to the fact that
true passion was probably eroded from her "act" years ago.
To her credit....she can sing like nobody's business. A voice like hers is
rare in our time of the Celtic hiccup (Sarah McLachlan, Alanis, Jewel, Sarah
Slean, Sinead) or the doleful, suicide trancers (Natalie Merchant, Margo
Timmons), the Idol wannabes (pick one), the faux stars (Paris, Jessica,
Ashley, Britney), the Sk8ter Grl movement (Avril, et al), or those ladies
just looking for a place in the big arena (Aimee Man, Tori Amos, etc.). Dion
harkens back to the Streisand-diva model and it just be the histrionics of
this approach that turns a lot of people off.
