Well, number one, thanks for letting me know that either I wouldn't
know talent if it bit me on the ass or that my conception of "talent"
is utterly retarded.
Second: I believe Lily Allen is a talented singer in the sense that I
enjoy listening to her sing, and that I think she sings in a way that
fits both the lyrics of the songs themselves and the overall persona
she's created. You know...like Tom Waits and Kim Deal and Kelly
Clarkson did. Her vocal style is the correct vocal style for the
bitchy, sarcastic lyrics and bubblegummy tunes. This record would
suck if she was a "better" singer, because the persona would ring
false.
Actually, you know who Lily Allen really reminds me of? There's a
very funny series of British young adult novels by a writer named
Louise Rennison, about a 14-year-old girl named Georgia Nicolson.
Lily Allen's persona is basically what Georgia Nicolson will be when
she hits her early 20s.
