Shins are from Portland by way of Albuquerque,New Mexico.

Btw...I sent this many hours ago and it has yet to emerge from the ether so I will try again:

I can see the Ibiza connection because when I first heard the single that M2 has
been playing for about 3 months now I thought it was more of a Siesta Records
influenced neo samba/bossanova style. I heard her on Conan this week doing the
same song and noted the strong ska/reggae flavor in the performance. I just
figured she was having fun reworking her own material much like BoB Dylan does
but now I will have to give it another listen to see if the reggae/ska elements
stand out the same way on the single as the did on the live Conan performance.
This argument reminds of what some said about the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
back in the day. They came from somewhat privileged backgrounds and yet they
capitalized on the gut bucket Fat Possum style blues rock (not exactly Blues
Hammer but you get the picture).
There was an outcry about how yet again the rich white man has stolen the poor
black man's sound and profited on the backs of poor sharecroppers and whatnot..
Ah well...I like JSBX and I like R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough and they all have received some of my money somewhere
along the line.
