I don't mind affected accents too much myself. I love The Shins new album "Wincing the night away" ...which sounds to me a lot like he's affecting an English accent and they are from Portland Oregon.  

My first impression was "Ah, this must have been similar to what it was like for people in Liverpool when they first heard the Beatles singing with another accent".

Not sure what the attraction of doing that is, but it doesn't bother me... I suppose there's a certain amount of musicians that want to reinvent themselves to varying degrees... Bob Dylan also comes to mind.
