It's been a long time since I lived somewhere that had a viable record store. But when I was in college in Jonesboro, Arkansas, there was a great store there called Hot Dogs. On various visits, the salesman, Mike turned me onto:

Love And Rockets' - "Earth Sun Moon" - This is my favorite Love And Rockets album; very Beatlesque, to me.

Balaam and the Angel - "Live Free Or Die" - One of the great lost Hair Metal albums. Balaam's album before this one wasn't good; and the one after this one wasn't good. But "Live Free Or Die" is excellent. It reminds me of a mix of The Cult, ZZ Top, and DLR-era Van Halen.

The Black Crowes - "Shake Your Money Maker" - Mike was playing this one, gosh, like 9-months or a year before it broke, and became the hit that it eventually became.

King's X - "Out of the Silent Planet" - I love this one. These guys sound like a mid-point between Led Zeppelin and the Beatles, two of my favorite acts.

I used to always go to Hot Dogs when I would return to Jonesboro, once or twice a year. But it finally went out of business ten or twelve years ago. We also lost Discount Records in Little Rock, and Peaches Records in North Little Rock, both of which were good stores, at almost the same time. There is still a great used and bootleg record shop, Arkansas Record & CD Exchange in North Little Rock; but Arkansas is now mostly a wasteland of Wal-Mart music departments, Best Buys, and Barnes and Nobles. Internet stores have been a great thing for me, because no one in Arkansas is interested in stocking what I like, anyway.
